Water removal and extraction is a big undertaking and perhaps the most important step in mitigating the damage to your flooded home. More water removal equates to shorter drying times and better outcomes. The longer materials are wet, the more difficult they are to salvage. If you have a lot of wet carpet and pad, consider getting professional help or removing the carpet.

Over the decades I’ve seen countless property owners try to remove water with a wet vacuum or carpet shampoo machine. Although these machines will remove water from the carpet, they’re not capable of removing any water from the cushion/pad. The wet pad is what dooms most water damage projects. To save it requires specialized extraction tools, and to try saving it can result in stains, odors or worse. If you have more than 50 SF of wet carpet, consider having it looked at by a restoration pro.
